NSF & the National Robotics Initiative

A few of the videos I have had the joy to produce as a contractor for the National Science Foundation.

-Robots are about to transform how we live. Decades of science and engineering research (and lab time) are behind it.

A Walk in the Park

You can never step into the same river twice.  Or the same creek for that matter.  Here’s a fun video I made from a flooded creek:

Mono Lake Drought in California

Harvests of Hope

This video was shot at Mono Lake. Mono Lake is part of the ancient Mono Basin formed about 1 million years ago. It is one of the oldest lakes in North America and covers about 65 square miles. It has no outlet, which makes its chemical composition unique, providing important habitat for between 1-2 million migratory birds.

The video starts at a sign marking the water level in 1941 the year they seriously began diverting water to Los Angeles to support a growing urban population. A combination of drought and overuse depleted Mono Lake and endangered the thriving and rare ecosystem.

Between 1941 and 1990 the lake dropped 45 vertical feet and had lost half of its volume leaving 18,500 acres of exposed lakebed and increasing its salinity so that it’s now 2.5 times as salty as the ocean. There are now measures in place to protect the lake from having too much water diverted, but without enough rain to replenish what’s been lost, it’s unlikely that Mono Lake will ever return to its original level.
